Turboalgor S.r.l.

THE COMPANY

Turboalgor is an innovative SME participated by the Angelantoni Group, synonymous with knowledge and expertise in the construction and optimisation of refrigeration systems.

Through the FREEEX brand, Turboalgor develops, experiments, tests and distributes technology that enables transcritical CO₂ refrigeration systems to achieve higher levels of efficiency. The products, the Free Piston Expander (FPE) and its Fluid Control Valve (FCU), covered by two international patents are able to  makethe compression cycle of refrigerants more efficient.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Freeex is conceived to drastically reduce energy consumption in the transcritical CO2 cold industry sector. This technology compresses the refrigerant before it reaches the main compressor without energy consumption, thus improving the energy efficiency and cooling capacity of the system.

Freeex is composed by patented Free Piston Expander with its patented Control Valve. The innovative system provides for the recovery of potential energy available within the conventional refrigeration cycle which would otherwise be lost at the Expansion Valve.

The gas available at intermediate pressure between Gas Cooler and Evaporator is used by the Free Piston Expander with the aim of carrying out a pre-compression of the refrigerant fluid directed towards the main compressor. Therefore, the pre-compression of the refrigerant in the main circuit is made possible without using an external energy source. Along the main circuit, refrigerant which leaves the heat exchangers will be at a lower temperature than the one which leaves the gas cooler. This indirectly increases the Cooling Capacity of the refrigerant which will undergo a further expansion process at expansion valve, before reaching the evaporator of the system.

THE LIFE PROJECT

Turboalgor at the forefront of EU climate neutrality by 2050

The EU F-Gas Regulation envisages a phase-down of HFCs by 80 per cent in 2030, and the proposed revision of Regulation (EU) 517/2014 aims to reduce the amount of HFCs placed on the market by 98 per cent by 2050 (compared to 2015).

Turboalgor is the recipient of the LIFE European call for proposals, funded by the European Community.

LIFE TURBOALGOR CO₂ thus contributes to the implementation of the European Green Deal and in particular to Regulation (EU) 2021/1119 (the European Climate Act), which sets a binding target of a net reduction of greenhouse gases of at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 and the climate neutrality of the EU by 2050 at the latest.
